Children's ski clothes - keep small people happy and comfortable in the snow

If you’ve ever browsed through catalogues or websites for children's ski clothes, you’ll have seen the vast variety of garments on offer. There’s no doubt that kitting your children out in the right ski clothes is vitally important. If they’re cold they will be miserable and not want to ski. If they’re hot they will – yes, you’ve guessed it – also be miserable!

We have found that the most important thing is to strike a balance between something that keeps out the elements, and doesn’t overheat your child. You don’t need to buy the latest fashionable gear from well-known names. We buy perfectly suitable ski wear with a far more modest price tag.

Outer layer
Whatever your budget, there are essential items which your child needs for comfortable skiing.

Your child must have a waterproof, insulated outer layer. This could either be a one-piece ski suit which we have found to be especially useful for babies and toddlers. Or a two-piece combination of a kids ski jacket teamed with ski pants or salopettes for an older child.

How do I get the right size?
Whichever you choose, the garments should be plenty big enough for base layers underneath, and for ease of movement. A good way of telling whether the ski clothes are the right size is to see if the sleeves ride up the arms if junior holds hands up in the air. If the garment isn’t tight around the bottom or too short in the leg when sitting down, then it is a good size.

Can my child wear regular gloves?
Ski gloves are a must. These should be waterproof and insulated. It is worth making sure that the gloves come sufficiently over the wrists to overlap with the cuffs of your child’s ski jacket or ski suit. This stops the snow from going both up the sleeves and down inside the gloves at the same time.

Base layers
Underneath the outer layer your child will need to wear base layers. The number and thickness really does depend on when and where you are skiing.

The trick for really cold temperatures is to wear several thin layers. Your child might wear a thermal vest and a roll-neck long-sleeved jersey top. If it is really cold, add a thin fleece as a layer. For skiing in glorious spring sunshine, your child may only need a t-shirt underneath their ski clothes.

How do I keep my child's feet warm?
One item of ski gear not to forget is proper ski socks These thick socks have been specially designed to minimise the chance of getting blisters. As they are nice and thick they will keep your child’s feet much warmer and are far more comfortable than wearing one or two pairs of ordinary socks.

Not just for the mountains
Although children's ski clothes have been designed to keep your child comfortable and protected from the weather whilst on the slopes, we also find them very useful at home when the weather turns wintery.
