Family skiing accommodation - what's available and how to choose?

When you start searching for suitable family skiing accommodation, you’ll find a huge range is available, and it is easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of choice.

Where do I begin?
We find it best to start our search by narrowing our requirements. Accept from the outset that it'll be quite likely that you'll have to make a compromise somewhere along the way!

Think not only about the type of accommodation you’d like, but also where you’d ideally like it to be situated in relation to the ski slopes.

Certainly for us, the most important requirement is ease of access from where we’re staying and the amenities we’ll need on holiday. With the children in tow we really don't want to be taking a bus or car ride to the slopes each day!

What are popular family skiing accommodation choices?
If you’re looking for relatively easy option, then perhaps consider a hotel on a half-board basis. For families, hotels are popular because there is no cooking to be done and everything is ready for when you arrive.

Perhaps you find hotels a little impersonal. A popular alternative amongst British skiers is the catered chalet. Often marketed as a ‘home from home’ these are properties where guests have their own rooms, but eat together at meal times. Some chalets are set up specifically for families and have the convenience of having equipment you might need readily available.

Another alternative is the self-catering or condo option. You gain the flexibility to do as you please, and can either opt to cook yourself or eat out. There’s no denying that this option requires more effort on your part, but there are usually substantial cost savings for families when compared to hotel or chalet prices.

We’ve tried each of these three options, and although we have our favourite (we’re not letting on which one!) we’d recommend that you think carefully about what you want from it while you’re there – apart simply being somewhere to sleep.

What should I think about to help me decide?
Ask yourself a series of questions to establish which option will fit best with your family’s requirements.
Do you want to be within easy access of amenities?
Do you enjoy meeting new people and like the company of others?
Finally, what is your budget?

From your answers to those questions you should be able to work out which family skiing accommodation will suit your family best. Then you can research your chosen resort to find the most suitable place to stay.
