Ski accessories – which do you really need?

Ski accessories can be divided into two categories. First there are those which you and your family will need. Then there are those which look great, you think you can’t manage without, but which actually will just clutter up your suitcases. We’re here to guide you through the gadgets so you end up with only the things you’re going to use.

What items should you have?
Let’s start with those items that you’ll need. Everyone in the family, including the smallest of babies must have proper eye protection. We’ve found that goggles are best for young children because they have a good elasticated strap to hold them in place. You’ll probably find that babies will wriggle and object to wearing goggles, but their eyes will be protected from the glare of the sun and reflected glare off the snow. When our children were babies we'd pop them into a back-pack carrier to walk around resort. The number of times we'd have to stop an adjust those goggles!

Older children will probably alternate between goggles and sunglasses, depending on the weather conditions. One of the most useful ski accessories we’ve found is a sunglass strap. They’re great when you fall over because your sunglasses won’t fall off completely.

When they're not skiing, children will need a warm hat – unless their suit or jacket has an integral hood that stays in place. They'll also need gloves or mittens to keep their hands warm and protected.

Another skiing accessory which we've found very useful when out in the snow is apres ski boots. Each member of the family has a pair and they keep feet beautifully warm, especially when we're wearing ski socks.

Skin care
Even though you're going on a ski holiday when it'll be chilly and more than likely snowing, you should make sure that everyone’s skin is protected from the sun. Even when the skies are overcast you can get sunburnt in the mountains, so keep everyone in the family safe by taking some sun cream with you when you’re out skiing. That way, you can re-apply cream when needed. Likewise, a tube of sun protection lip salve will save everyone’s lips from the elements.

Like the latest must-have gadgets?
If you browse through the pages of a winter sports retailer’s catalogue or website, you’ll see loads of weird and wonderful gadgets. Now we’re not saying that you won’t find these useful, or that you shouldn’t buy them. Just remember to buy the basics first and then you can look at other ski accessories.

We find that we have to strike a balance between buying a superb, innovative product and the reality and practicality of getting to use it at the same time as attending to the children. For example, we love the idea of ski straps or boot toggles to make it easier for everyone to carry their equipment, or special protectors to prevent ski boots from wearing down when walking.

At the same time, there’s a choice to be made between the time it takes to get everyone using those products correctly versus the simplicity of just making do without. We’ve found that where the under-five’s are concerned, it is far easier to get from A to B as smoothly as possible, without the distraction of the latest must-have gadget – no matter how useful we think it is! Remember that a family ski holiday is all about having fun, so the ski accessories you choose should help, not hinder the whole experience!
