Popular and practical, ski mittens are great for young children

You really can’t find anything better than ski mittens to keep very young children’s hands warm in the snow on ski holidays. They’re so practical and we have no hesitation in recommending them.

They're especially practical for babies and toddlers
Have you ever tried to get a small child’s fingers lined up with glove fingers? Getting babies and young children kitted out for the snow can be a bit of a marathon at the best of times, without the added complication of getting each finger into the correct glove finger.

Take a look at this picture - our youngest is happily playing in the snow wearing a great pair.

We find it far easier to get ski mittens onto small hands – and anything that makes the process of getting small people ready smoothly on ski vacations has our vote.

Then there’s the comfort factor. Ski gloves can be a little bulky for small fingers, whereas your child’s fingers will be snug together if he wears mittens. There’s no bulky fabric between each finger, and you’ll only have your child’s thumbs to get into position.

In all honesty, it doesn’t really matter if you can’t get babies thumbs into place. At that age, what does matter is protecting small hands from the elements. Each of our children, when they were babies, would manage to wriggle their thumbs out.

What are they made of?
They have a waterproof outer layer with reinforcement across the palms made from a thicker, more robust fabric. There should be a soft lining fabric on the inside. The construction will be completed with a layer of insulating fabric between the inside and the waterproof outside layers.

When you go buy a pair, it’s worth checking to see how far over your child’s wrist they reach. It’s best to buy some that overlap with the cuffs on his snowsuit or jacket as this will help keep the cold and the snow out.

How do I prevent my child from losing them?
Very young children do seem to be remarkably able to wriggle their hands out of mittens. When our children were babies we often had to pull their mittens back onto their hands. Not to be defeated, we simply attached a piece of elastic or string onto each one and threaded them through the sleeves of their snowsuits. Attaching each separately to the cuff, or buying a pair with a loop ready to pass over the wrist both work well for older toddlers. That way, if hands did manage to escape, at least we wouldn’t lose anything.

If the sound of ski mittens sounds appealing, they’re not just for children – you can buy them for grown-ups too!
