Ski Switzerland

wide choice of resorts and stunning scenery

Ski Switzerland – with all sorts of fabulous alpine ski areas from famous high altitude resorts to quiet, unspoilt mountain villages, it's difficult to know where to start.

Maybe you have your favourites just as we have? One thing's for certain, a family skiing holiday here is sure to be a great experience.

Where are the main areas to ski?
Switzerland has some incredible ski resorts set against awe-inspiring scenery.

As the Alps mountain range runs through the country from East to West, there are plenty of places for skiing. Just a few are maked on the map below to give you an idea of their location.

In the French-speaking east of the country you’ll find the Verbier area with its interlinked resorts, plus smaller, more family orientated Villars and Les Diablerets. Champery and Morgins are linked with France as part of Les Portes du Soleil – ski Switzerland in the morning and have lunch in France, anyone?

If you like the idea of popping between countries, try snow-sure and car-free Zermatt. With scenery dominated by the Matterhorn mountain, Zermatt links to Cervinia in Italy.

If car-free resorts sound appealing, try Wengen or Saas Fee.

In the centre of the country are Adelboden, Murren (which links to Wengen) and Grindlewald. A little further west are Andermatt and Engleberg.

In the west of the country are Flims, St Moritz, Arosa and the linked resorts of Klosters and Davos. The latter is a town, so there’s plenty of non-skiing activities to do as well as winter sports.

Doesn’t the country have a reputation of being expensive?
Much of this perception is because of the reputation that certain resorts have as attracting the ‘jet set’ – think St Moritz, Gstaad or Klosters – and that the country is automatically expensive.

A lot will depend on the foreign currency exchange rate. If the Swiss Franc is strong against Sterling or the Dollar, then yes – the country is going to appear expensive. On the other hand, a weak Franc means more spending-power for you.

If you want to ski Switzerland on family ski holidays, look out for good deals on lift passes. We were attracted to Switzerland because some resorts don’t charge children aged under nine for a lift pass – a great saving if you’ve more than one child.

Getting around
The country has an excellent road and rail network. There are regular connecting services between main train routes and mountain railways.

With stunning scenery, choice of resorts and a friendly atmosphere, the country is well worth a visit for ski vacations.
