If you’re looking for family skiing Austria has a good choice of resorts.
There are traditional villages, high altitude resorts and large interlinked areas, so you can be sure of finding somewhere that’ll suit all skiers in your family.

Which resorts are particularly good for family skiing?
Austria has a reputation for friendly ski resorts so it’s no surprise that some that are especially suitable for families.

Take a look at Rauris, Hochrimml, Ladis, Ischgl, Ellmau / Scheffau or Kirchdorf.

Which are close to an airport?
The Stubai valley village resorts of Neustift and Fulpmes to the south of Innsbruck and Seefeld to the north are both less than an hour away from the airport – great if your children don’t travel well. From Salzburg, Schladming is around an hour and a half. Generally, though, most resorts are within a couple of hours of either Innsbruck or Salzburg.

My children can already ski, where’s good for mixed ability families?
Try a linked area, though remember that this can mean both linked by ski runs and being linked by road. So if getting to different resorts on skis appeals to your children as it does with ours, make sure that there are suitable runs down and lifts back up.

Linked areas with excellent variety for all levels of skier to try are the Ski Welt, the area of Ladis / Fiss/Serfaus, Silvretta, the Gastein valley, Lech / Zurs or Zittertal.

What about the snow – is there plenty for skiing?
Austria has many low altitude resorts – but – remember that the central European climate here is different to, say the French Alps. So you can’t really compare like for like in terms of altitude. If you’re worried, check that your chosen resort has artificial snow making and look at historic snow reports.

If altitude is going to influence your choice of resort, look at St Anton or Obergurgl. Or if you want access to a glacier there’s Solden, Stubai, Pitzal, the Ziller Valley and Zell am See.

Accommodation for skiing
Austria has plenty of hotels and family-run guest houses, but little self-catered apartments or catered chalet holidays compared with France.

How do I get my family there?
Skiing in Austria features heavily in the major UK tour operator programmes, so if you’re looking for a ski holiday package then this is where to start. You’ll fly into either Innsbruck or Salzburg and most resorts are within a couple of hours of the airport - great if you have small children who are eager to get straight to resort.
